Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB), in collaboration with the British High Commission in Bandar Seri Begawan, recently conducted the Sustainable Finance Workshop 2026.
The two-day workshop brought together representatives from financial institutions and relevant public sector stakeholders to strengthen knowledge and practical capabilities in sustainable finance. The initiative supports the implementation of the Brunei Darussalam Sustainable Finance Roadmap (SFR), particularly Pillar IV: Knowledge, Skills and Talent Development.
With climate- and sustainability-related risks becoming increasingly relevant to financial stability and global and regional frameworks continuing to evolve, strengthening the technical capabilities of regulators, supervisors and industry practitioners remains an important priority. Against this backdrop, the workshop focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and practical competencies needed to incorporate sustainability considerations into institutional policies, regulatory and supervisory practices, and financial sector activities.
Throughout the workshop, participants explored key areas, including the foundations of sustainable finance, climate and environmental risks, the evolving sustainable finance policy landscape, sustainability-related reporting and disclosures, as well as sustainable finance instruments and market practices. The sessions also provided opportunities for participants to exchange views and share perspectives on the practical considerations and challenges in advancing sustainable finance within Brunei Darussalam.
Opening remarks were delivered by Yang Mulia Hajah Sufinah binti Haji Sahat, Assistant Managing Director (Development and Surveillance), BDCB. In her remarks, she highlighted the financial sector's important role in supporting Brunei Darussalam’s transition to a more sustainable and climate-resilient economy. She also emphasised the need to build the sector’s capabilities to respond to emerging sustainability considerations and support the continued implementation of the SFR.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr Charis Yeap, Southeast Asia Regional Lead for Green Finance and Carbon Pricing Mechanisms at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). In this role, she oversees the development and delivery of the regional strategy and leads programmes and policy initiatives aimed at strengthening green financial systems and enabling the financing of credible green and transition projects across Southeast Asia.
Drawing on her regional expertise and experience, Dr Yeap provided participants with practical insights into the development and implementation of sustainable finance frameworks, instruments and market practices, while highlighting opportunities to strengthen the financial sector’s role in supporting credible transition pathways and sustainable economic development.
The Sustainable Finance Workshop 2026 reflects the continued cooperation between BDCB and the British High Commission in Bandar Seri Begawan in advancing sustainable finance in Brunei Darussalam. Building on previous capacity-building engagements between the two institutions in 2021 and 2022, the workshop forms part of their continued efforts to strengthen knowledge, skills and institutional capacity in support of the objectives of the Brunei Darussalam Sustainable Finance Roadmap.
