Announcement of the New Family Banknotes Series

3 MIN READ

Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) today announced the planned issuance of the New Family Banknotes Series for five denominations – BND1, BND5, BND10, BND100, and BND500 – marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the nation’s currency development. This series is scheduled to enter circulation in the first half of 2026.

The new series will feature upgraded security features, in line with global advancements in the currency industry. These enhancements safeguard the security and integrity of Brunei Darussalam’s currency while strengthening protection against counterfeiting. This initiative reflects BDCB’s dedication to keeping our currency safe, especially as cash continues to play a vital role and is still widely used in everyday life, even as Brunei Darussalam advances towards a digital economy.

The new banknotes will remain recognisable and familiar to the public, preserving their strong national identity and heritage. In particular, they will proudly retain His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s portrait on the BND1, BND5, BND10, and BND100, and the portrait of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien on the BND500, as well as iconography on both the obverse and reverse of the banknotes.

In addition, the new series reaffirms Brunei Darussalam’s official unit of currency according to the Currency Order, 2004, that is, the 'dollar’. The term ‘Ringgit’ has been replaced with ‘Brunei Dollars’ across all denominations. This change aims to strengthen public familiarity and encourage wider adoption of the term.

In its ongoing effort to promote inclusivity and ensure that payment access remains convenient for all segments of society, BDCB is introducing a new DOMINOTM feature in the upcoming banknote series to assist the visually impaired. This feature consists of raised dots found on the lower right corner of each new banknote, with each denomination displaying a unique arrangement to help users easily identify them.

BDCB reassures the public that all existing banknotes in circulation will remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside the New Family Banknotes Series.
